A network of about 10.000 statistical operators, working together to provide high statistical information not only for Italy but also for those subjects who are interested in the Italian situation all over the world.
Within the frame of the National Statistical Program, one thousand direct surveys or data elaboration projects - both national and local - are carried out every year. The National Statistical System (Sistan) assures the uniformity of direction, the homogeneity of used methods and the rationalization of the processes of official statistics through an organizational and functional coordination plan, involving the entire public administration at central, regional and local levels. The task of coordinating the NSS is statutorily held by ISTAT, Italian National Statistical Institute. Besides Istat, other bodies belong to the National Statistical System, namely the statistical offices of: ministries, national agencies, regions and autonomous provinces, provinces, municipalities, chambers of commerce, local governmental offices, some private agencies and private subjects who have specific characteristics determined by law.
